The duties of the Recording Office are set out by state Statutes which include the recording of documents, primarily real estate records, indexing and maintaining a permanent record which is accessible to the general public. Computer stations are available for the viewing of all records with the exception of military discharges and marriage licenses.

Deeds, mortgages, liens, judgments, plats, power of attorney, incorporation, and UCC's are some of the documents of record in the Recording Office.

All documents presented for recording must be an original or certified copy. Social Security numbers should not be included on documents to be recorded. If this information is included, you will be asked to redact before recording.

All property searches must be done by the individual. Staff members will verify some information by telephone if the book and page information is provided. Some copies will be processed via e-mail(recording@dallascounty-al.org) or you may request by regular mail.

Corporation paperwork is filed in the Recording Office and forwarded to the Office of the Secretary of State. The registered agent address must be located in Dallas County. Effective January 1, 2011, a new State Law, Code of Alabama Title 10A, changed the fees and procedures for filing Alabama Business and Nonprofit Entities. To request reservation of an entity name, you may contact the Secretary of State at  www.sos.state.al.us or call 334-242-7200, fax 334-242-4993. Pertinent requirements pertaining to reserving an entity name, is listed in Title 10A, Chapter 1, Article 5 of the Alabama Business and Nonprofit Entities Code.
