Credit Recovery Instructor (Part-Time)

The Dallas County Commission is seeking a candidate for the position of Credit Recovery Instructor. This person will work at both the Perry Varner Educational & Treatment Facility and the Juvenile Detention Center.  The position is Part-time (12-16 hrs. per week). The Credit Recovery program is designed to keep youth up to date on approved school curriculum and help keep them on track with transferrable grades to allow for a smooth transition back to the desired school upon release.  The person in this position must be able to work with the youth referred to the facilities and be able to teach in confinement and residential program settings.

Education and Experience:

Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education; Master’s Degree preferred but not required.  A minimum of 3 – 5 years relative experience.  Must be proficient in typing and computer skills.  Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Juvenile Detention Director, the Detention Counselor will direct the activities of detained youth in all areas.  The Counselor will maintain the safety of detainees at all times, conduct regular check of detainees and maintain order in facility.  Serves meals, supervise youth during visiting hours and may transport detainees to various appointments.  Performs various housekeeping duties or supervise detainees in this function.  Detention Counselor must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency and be able to work flexible hours and be on call on a rotating basis.  Detention Counselor must also have a good temperament and ability to function well in stressful situations.

Position Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively with detainees, staff, law enforcement personnel, and others, orally and in writing;
  • Ability to efficiently plan and organize work;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers, detainees, and other professionals;
  • Ability to work with maladjusted juveniles;
  • Ability and willingness work as a part of a professional team;

Education

  • High School Diploma
  • 3-5 years job related experience preferred not required

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Laborer

Dallas County Commission has an opening for a Laborer in the Road Department. Work schedule is Monday-Thursday- 10 hour days.

Applicants must have a valid State of Alabama Driver's License. Persons in this position will perform manual labor which may include the following duties: shovel asphalt from dump truck, spread asphalt with rake, sweep road, spray tar and spread cement, clear ditches and beaver dams, install pipes, dig trenches and patch holes. May operate chain saw, tractors, sheep footer and tire rollers. Other duties will include those assigned by supervisor.

Successful applicant must have physical dexterity to operate various pieces of equipment and physical tolerance to work outside, sometimes under adverse conditions. Must be able to lift over 50 pounds and have agility to crouch or crawl in restricted places, at times.
