                                                            Assistant Mechanic

Dallas County Commission has an opening for an Assistant Mechanic.  The employee will assist the Mechanic with oil changes and repairs of county equipment.  This person also will respond to requests for tire repairs; change and repair tires; run errands and maintain cleanliness of the County Shop as well as perform other duties as assigned.

Applicant must possess ability to read and understand road maps.  Must possess a valid State of Alabama Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Prefer one year of experience working in a shop, repairing tires and operating road crew equipment, or some combination of experience which provides the qualifications listed above. Applicant must have the ability to follow instructions, and the ability to work well with others.

                                                         PARKS WORKER

Dallas County is currently seeking a full-time Parks Worker to assist the Park Manager at Paul Grist State Park.   Duties will include cutting grass, cleaning office, bathrooms, visitor and work areas, assisting campers and volunteers, collecting fees and taking reservations.

Qualifications:  Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency; possession of a valid AL driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; must have the ability to handle money and to maintain accurate records; must have the ability to perform general cleaning and custodial work; previous experience in groundskeeping a plus; familiarity with Grist State Park preferred but not required. Must be able to interact with the public in a pleasant manner.  Must be able to work flexible hours.

Transfer Station Attendant

Dallas County Commission has an opening for a full-time Transfer Station Attendant in the Environmental Services Department.  

Under the general direction of the Environmental Services Director, the employee maintains the transfer station located in Orrville.  This employee will assist customers with unloading and dumping of trash; will ensure waste to be dumped meets all requirements and reports any illegal dumping to the Enforcement Officer.  Other duties will include those assigned by supervisor.

Applicants must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.  Must be able to work nonstandard hours.

                                                              Appraisal Clerk

Dallas County Commission is seeking candidates for the position of Appraisal Clerk in the Tax Assessor’s Office.  The Appraisal Clerk will work under the direction of the Tax Assessor and perform entry level departmental functions.   Essential tasks will include assisting the public in person and on the telephone, providing information concerning tax policies and procedures, computing taxes, assessing real and personal property and performing various clerical duties including extensive data entry.

Successful applicant must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. A minimum of one year of previous office experience which includes interacting with the general public preferred.  Must possess good written and verbal skills as well as math skills and ability to operate various types of office equipment.  Must be computer literate and familiar with general office procedures. Must have the ability to work well with co-workers, customers, county officials, and the general public. Must have a good work ethic and demonstrate strong initiative in performing various tasks in a busy office setting. Some overtime may be required occasionally during various seasons of the tax year.

Animal Control Officer

Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has an opening for an Animal Control Officer

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking candidates for the position of Animal Control Officer. This person will work under the direction of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and in conjunction with the Selma Animal Shelter.  The Animal Control Officer will be required to act on complaints concerning stray, abandoned and/or abused animals. Duties will include responding to and investigating calls from the public for animal control assistance, impounding animals, maintaining reports and keeping records and operating animal control devices and equipment. The officer may work around aggressive or vicious animals at any given time.

Successful applicant must have a High School diploma or GED certificate.  Must possess a valid State of Alabama Driver’s License with a clean record and be insurable by the Dallas County insurance carrier. Some experience with animal handling through a veterinarian‘s office or experience with farm animals desired but not required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact well with the public, to remain calm in stressful situations and to maintain records and reports.

Correctional Officers work under the direction of the Warden. Officers are directly responsible for the supervision of inmates.  Duties include but are not limited to security, feeding and assisting the staff with medical emergencies to name a few. Position Summary

Under the direction of the Juvenile Detention Director, the Detention Counselor will direct the activities of detained youth in all areas.  The Counselor will maintain the safety of detainees at all times, conduct regular check of detainees and maintain order in facility.  Serves meals, supervise youth during visiting hours and may transport detainees to various appointments.  Performs various housekeeping duties or supervise detainees in this function.  Detention Counselor must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency and be able to work flexible hours and be on call on a rotating basis.  Detention Counselor must also have a good temperament and ability to function well in stressful situations.

Laborer

Dallas County Commission has an opening for a Laborer in the Road Department. Work schedule is Monday-Thursday- 10 hour days.

Applicants must have a valid State of Alabama Driver's License. Persons in this position will perform manual labor which may include the following duties: shovel asphalt from dump truck, spread asphalt with rake, sweep road, spray tar and spread cement, clear ditches and beaver dams, install pipes, dig trenches and patch holes. May operate chain saw, tractors, sheep footer and tire rollers. Other duties will include those assigned by supervisor.

Successful applicant must have physical dexterity to operate various pieces of equipment and physical tolerance to work outside, sometimes under adverse conditions. Must be able to lift over 50 pounds and have agility to crouch or crawl in restricted places, at times.
